Second graders have been working as biologists these past few months investigating why some trees aren't growing as well as others in a certain area. We have been to Anthony Lakes to observe a diverse ecosystem, looked at maps of tree dispersal in the area, discussed data collected by other scientists regarding the fruit (seed) production from past years of these particular trees, created models of water distribution and most recently visited Nella Mae's Farm here in Cove to learn about soil nutrients, decomposers and compost. Nella, let us dig in the compost to look for decomposers, measure the temperature of the compost, explore the greenhouse and taste the freshly grown veggies! We are all set to do some hard thinking and draw some conclusions!
