Sharing

Our third-grade class recently enjoyed a wonderful field trip to Grande Ronde Retirement on March 16th, where students reunited with their Pen Pals in a celebration of sharing and connection. The visit was filled with joy, laughter, and heartwarming moments that reminded us all of the special bonds that can form across generations.

The heart of our visit centered on the theme of sharing. Each third grader brought two special items from home—carefully chosen to fit in their backpacks and thoughtfully selected to be school-appropriate and non-living. Students also brought books, a piece of writing from school, and pictures to exchange with their Pen Pals. In turn, many of our Pen Pals came prepared with items of their own to share with the children. The room buzzed with conversation as students and seniors discovered each other's interests and delighted in the treasures they had brought to share.

After sharing their special items, students and Pen Pals worked together to decorate picture frames. This collaborative activity provided another meaningful opportunity for connection and creativity. Once complete, both the third graders and Pen Pals exchanged the decorated frames. A photograph was taken of each pair, and copies will be provided to both the student and their Pen Pal—a keepsake to cherish the memory of their time together.

The afternoon concluded with games and puzzles that brought even more laughter and friendly competition to the group. Whether working on a puzzle together or playing a game side-by-side, students and Pen Pals enjoyed quality time that highlighted the fun of friendship, regardless of age.

What made this field trip truly special was witnessing the genuine friendships blooming between our third graders and their Pen Pals. Despite the years that separate them, these friendships demonstrate that connection, kindness, and shared joy have no age limit. We are grateful to Grande Ronde Retirement for welcoming us so warmly and for the meaningful relationships that continue to grow between our third grade students and their Pen Pals.
